Wind power

20/07/2009

Crowborough Horticultural Society has an annual Open Show in which there are numerous competitions for fruit, vegetables, flowers and cooking. They recently introduced a photography competition and in 2009 the theme for one of the classes was “Power in the garden”.

Wind power seemed to be an obvious choice, so I bought a little toy windmill just for the competition. Late one May afternoon I took 51 photographs of this toy windmill. From above; from below; far away; close-up; with a short shutter speed; a long shutter speed; with the sun in front; with the sun behind. I found almost every possible permutation.

This is the photograph that I entered and it won first prize. The judge’s comments: “I like the bright strong contrasting colours—wind and sun—a comment on ‘now’ thinking”.

Of course, it wasn’t meant to be a comment on anything, but who am I to argue?
