This ancient track is to the south of Westerham in Kent, near an early Iron Age hillfort (800 BC to 42 AD). As such, the route is likely to have been used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

Houses numbers can sometimes end in letters such as 221B Baker Street in London. But in Fournier Street, the Georgian house to the right of number eleven is eleven and a half.

This number plate is on an old Dodge truck in Harmony, California. The town was founded in 1869 around a dairy, but in 2000 the population of the town was just 18 people.

I had the duration of a very short escalator ride to take this photograph using the macro setting on my camera.

I liked the way the umbrella was safely strapped in to this gentleman’s leather brief case, including the umbrella’s handle. As the proverb says, “A place for everything and everything in its place”.

What I like about this photograph at the junction of Old Street and Charlotte Road in London is that it’s so busy.

As well as the central point of interest of the man concentrating on cleaning the street, there’s a taxi going by with the taxi driver driving one-handed, “The Reliance” pub in between Fyfe Mcdade estate agents on the left and an empty shop on the right, and a sign advertising the fruit juices available from a sandwich shop on the corner.

Google Maps with Streetview is becoming increasingly important for identifying where I’ve taken photographs in London. So rather than tell you than these blue doors are somewhere near Old Street station, I can say that the building is on the junction of Leonard Street and Tabernacle Street.

Although the “no waiting” sign could be seen as an unwanted intrusion, I like the way that the blue of the sign matches the blue of the doors. And the reason for the soft shadows? It was raining.

This building is on the corner of Old Street and Pitfield Street in Hoxton, London. To accentuate the angles and lines, I’ve applied a threshold filter. This reduces the image to just two colours, black and white.

This photograph was taken on the London Underground (also known as “the Tube”). I’m standing on one side of a train carriage looking at a poster of a hand through the window of one of the doors on the opposite side. The rest of the image, including the yellow pole, comes from the reflection in the window.

Judging by the retro furniture and above lane ball returns, it would be easy to assume that ten-pin bowling has been played at Bloomsbury Lanes since the 1950s. Everything inside may be authentic but the bowling centre opened in 2005 (it used to be the underground car park of the Tavistock Hotel).

It wasn’t that long ago that Starbucks was the target of anti-globalisation protesters, which may be why it’s now trying a more subtle approach.

But for Stop the War Coalition protesters standing in the cold January air outside the Iraq Inquiry it seems that Starbucks was the coffee of choice.
