href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0051QVF7A/">Amazon Kindle 4 for my birthday.

Once I had registered the device online, it opened a personalised letter from Jeff Bezos which started: "Dear David, Kindle is a revolutionary reading device, and we're excited that you have joined the millions of people around the world who read on Kindle".

As I've studied interaction design, I was interested to see that the letter also said: "Our top design objective was for Kindle to disappear in your hands - to get out of your way - so you can enjoy your reading". It's not every day that designers tell us what they were trying to achieve and then ask us to email them with feedback.

To light the Kindle in the photograph, I just used an ordinary desk lamp, leant the Kindle on an old camera film box and placed it on top of my closed laptop computer.

I donated this photograph to the ADay.org project which asked people to photograph their daily life on 15 May 2012.

Tutorial: Depth of field

Abstract

Archive

Depth of field is "the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image". One way to control the depth of field is to use the camera's aperture-priority mode (it's often shown as "A" or "Av" on the mode dial). The aperture is the hole that affects the amount of light that is allowed through the camera lens to the digital sensor or film.

The aperture-priority mode allows the photographer to change the aperture whilst the camera finds a shutter speed that will produce a photograph that is correctly exposed.

Use large apertures for smaller depth of field

A large aperture will let more light through the lens than a small aperture and produce a smaller depth of field. The larger the aperture, the lower the f-number e.g. f/4.

A larger aperture can be useful when you want to concentrate the viewer's attention on a specific subject by making the background blurred and out of focus such as in nature or macro photography.

In my photograph of Scrabble letters, the first photograph uses a large aperture (f/5.6) and could have been shot without a tripod as the shutter speed was 1/250 seconds.

Use small apertures for greater depth of field

A small aperture will let less light through the lens than a large aperture and produce a greater depth of field. The smaller the aperture, the higher the f-number e.g. f/22.

A larger aperture can be useful when you want to allow the viewer to enjoy detail throughout the photograph such as in landscape photography where you may want both the foreground and background to be in focus.

In my photograph of Scrabble letters, the last photograph uses a small aperture (f/36) and needed a tripod as the shutter speed was 1/6 seconds.

H.
